6 Reviews of the Lulworth 4

Have just bought this tent for 65 off preloved, it is our first tunnel tent so we were looking forward to our first trip for some time. We did not have a practice run so was dreading putting it up. When we arrived on site it was absolutely pouring down. Despite this it took us about 30 mins to get it erected and was surprisingly easy. The tent stood up to torrential rain for 2 days and horrendous winds during the night. There was was 1 drip over a side door which stopped when I adjusted how the curtain was rolled up. The tent did not leak any where else so I was really pleased with it. It was short of some pegging points at the front in the high winds but we sorted this by using some heavy rocks to weight it down as the wind was getting under the SIG! Overall I am really pleased with this tent, it had the odd mark on it and the odd little tear but it stood up to the British weather easily. Looking forward to our next trip.

I recently bought a Kampa Lulworth 4 and choose it for many reasons - it seemed to be a good size for us 2 adults and Dog, with decent size bedrooms and also nice size living room.

Pitching is easy , ( loads quicker than our previous Vango diablo - Takes me about 20 mins to be up and pegged out using the method of doing one end of the poles first, then the back , then doing the middle ones and I can pitch easily on my own this way.

Nice tent, waterproof OK, no leaks in heavy rain, only one criticism is the bedroom material could be 'darker' but to stop morning light, but we wear eye masks any way so all good.

Very good tent spacious lots of windows. Nets/ blackout covers. Easy to erect, light airy and no condensation inside at all. Used for first time May 2010 in Wales. Weather lovely sunshine, rain last morning and light water drip where lamp hanger is in top of the roof. Only a few drips, will seal it next time. Sturdy and solid tent, plenty of room, and extension is good for cooking in etc

We purchased this particular tent after a lot of looking around. This tent took our eye straight away, for the look and most importantly for the size. The living area is a lovely size and the bedrooms are not bad either. We have slept 2 adults and 2 teenagers so far, but could easily fit in another 2 adults within the living area if needed. We have just returned from a 4day break, which tested the tent to its limit. A really windy few days and some heavy rain, but we were very pleased with the performance of this tent. Straight forward to put up, and packs away quite small, considering the size. Good tent for a good price!

Excellent value.Viewed loads before settling for this and we are very pleased. Although we are 'seasoned campers', it still took us an hour to pitch but only due to high winds and short legs! As always, other campers came over and helped. With regards to size and weight,we managed to pack it and 10 days needs into a corsa. Only problem we had were 2 small leaks over both side doors. We contacted the supplier who said no prob with replacing it but for the sake of £3 worth of sealant tape decided to sort it ourselves. A comfortable long stay tent for 2 adults and probably 2 littluns if you've got em!

After looking at a huge number of different tents we purchased a Kampa Lulworth 4 because it had all the features we required: built in extension, large living space with standing room throughout, split bedrooms, and steel construction. All that for £250 is a serious bargain - the only comparable tent is the Outwell Arkansas 5 which is about £470, or something like a Outwell Minnesota 4 with additional extension which would cost nearly £400.

First the good:

The tent is easy to pitch but probably requires two people - the two of us were able to easily pitch it in about 40 minutes but you could do it quicker with practice. It comes down easy enough too, no problems there. The quality of the materials used also seems excellent, especially the groudsheet which is really nice and tough (and very waterproof). The poles are good quality powder coated steel which should be quite resistant to rust. All the zips are excellent quality and really chunky - they seemed very robust indeed. The colour of the tent looks really nice when pitched too - it is a real eye catcher!

The excellent design gives a large bright living space with full standing room throughout thanks to the flat front wall. The built-in front extension means that when it's raining you can still have the front door open and enter/leave the tent without bringing the rain inside. The tent gets hot inside on a sunny day but all 4 windows can be rolled up leaving just a mesh (or that can be rolled up too) and this cools the tent quickly making it pleasant (or at least bearable!) inside even on a very hot day.

The light roof and panoramic windows make it very nice to sit inside when the weather gets worse or in the evening. There is plenty of space inside for a table and chairs for 4 people and it is nice and comfortable with the carpet too. Needless to say the extension is really useful for storing/cooking or keeping out of the rain.

Overall we really loved the layout and design of the tent and especially the versatility of the mesh/open window/door combinations and the built in extension.

Now the bad:

I have to question the quality control on these tents and I suspect that Kampa are trying to make a £450 tent for £250 and therefore cutting some corners. The first tent we got had a ring and pin missing on one section and some missing stitching. I'm glad we checked this before we went away because it was impossible to pitch it without this vital component! We were given a replacement tent which we pitched fine and took to the lake district for a weekend.

This second tent was awesome until a torrential downpour when we found it was leaking quite badly over the side door where a loop hadn't been stitched in properly. It also had a very slight leak in the roof - both could probably be fixed easily with some seam sealant. However, when we re-pitched it at home for airing we found a small slit in the flysheet near a seam - the slit was underneath the seam tape so definitely a manufacturing fault and not something we had done. It was only a small slit but this could easily have become a gaping hole in strong wind! This forced us to take the tent back again and this time we asked for a full refund as I've lost my faith in this tent which is a great shame.

Some other minor annoyances: the loops and toggles for holding the windows/doors up are cheap and feel like they'll break very easily, they are also too small and inconsistently positioned which makes it fidly to roll the windows/doors up and hold them in place. There are no velcro fastenings on the botton of the side doors and the overlap with the groundsheet isn't very large which made us think that in strong driving rain you might get a lot of water coming inside! The velcro fastening on the outside of the doors are mostly covered by the rain flaps which make them fairly useless. The velcro fastenings inside the windows are cheaply done and only stiched on one length meaning you have to be careful and not just tug at them to undo them. There is no mesh on the front door which seems stupid since there is mesh on every other door/window.

The bags for the tent and poles are really cheap polyester and our pole bag was already worse for wear after just one trip - I don't think it would last long at all. The bedroom compartment was a tight fit and looked under a lot of tension even on the elasticated straps. Also some of the stitching on the tension points on the flysheet didn't inspire a great deal of confidence. Lastly, the side canopy is totally pointless - get ride of it Kampa and use the money saved on improving the quality of some other parts of the tent!

Summary:

Seven out of ten, good effort, excellent design, spec and features but let down by the quality control. If you get one of these that is 'perfect' then I think you'll love it. I'm genuinely gutted that both of ours have had faults as it is potentially a really fantastic tent, especially for just £250!

Manufacturer's Description

A larger than average four berth tent that also has the benefit of a large integrated front canopy; so much better than the flimsy, hard to attach canopies that are available as optional extras on most tents. The canopy provides a large sun shade for those sunny days but also protects the front of the tent during inclement weather and allows the front door to remain open even if it is raining - you need never feel trapped in your tent again. The front of the tent features a panel that can be rolled to one side to create a door or you can open the whole of the front for alfresco living.

There is also a large door in each side of the tent, allowing you lots of entry and exit options and keeping the tent cool in hot weather. These side doors also have the benefit of full length fly screens to keep ventilation flowing without letting the bugs in. Better than average headroom, a Daylight Panel and a large living area makes the tent suitable for any length of stay as it’s quick to set up yet large enough for an extended holiday. The large inner tent has a dividing curtain that can be zipped shut to provide two separate bedrooms or opened to create one large area; ideal for families with small children or perhaps for two adults looking for extra space. The ultimate 4 berth tent?
